If you were a sports enthusiast and lived in the Niagara region, then you were almost certain to know of Bob Lavelle. “Heater”, as he was known to many, was part owner of the Niagara Falls Mariners Baseball Club, and part owner of Clancy’s Bar on Stanley Avenue. He also played an instrumental role in making the NHL Slo-Pitch tournament a success, which in it’s prime was largely successful and brought thousands of hockey fans flooding Oakes Park to hunt for autographs and to watch the games.Sadly, Bob passed away in June of 2009, but his memory is honoured by the Robert A. Lavelle memorial fund which provides monies for ProKids, the Robert A. Lavelle Bursary Program, and the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre. In addition to the fund, the Niagara Celebrity Slo-Pitch tournament returned and the inauguration of the Sports Celebrity Dinner & Auction. Although he lived in Stoney Creek in his final years, Bob still kept projects going in Niagara Falls. He never lost sight for the community of Niagara Falls, and the two events created in his honour will assist and support families within the Niagara Region and carrying on his legacy in the Niagara Sports community.
