Lois McCabe, affectionately known as “Mrs. M” by her staff and volunteers, dedicated her life to enhancing aquatic programs and facilities across the Niagara Region. As the Niagara Falls Family YMCA Aquatic Director for 30 years and the Royal Life Saving Society Water Safety Chairman for 10 years, her influence in implementing and planning swimming programs in Niagara Falls was significant. Mrs. McCabe was highly praised and respected by her employees and volunteer workers for her dedicated work ethics in water safety, implementing new swimming programs and working with special needs swimmers. She received a Certificate of Thanks from the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Ross MacDonald, for increasing the number of students in Life Saving Certification classes. In the summer of 1971, Mrs. McCabe assisted in organizing and providing qualified staff for a new Emergency Boat Patrol unit on Chippawa Creek. That summer, five people were saved from drowning and several minor incidents required assistance by Mrs. McCabe’s staff. Lois McCabe symbolized the ideal role model in all aspects of aquatic training and safety. She is a worthy member of the Sports Wall of Fame.
