The Niagara Falls Collegiate Vocational Institute Senior Rugby (Football) team won the 1944 Niagara District Championship by defeating teams from Fort Erie, Welland, Port Colborne, St. Catharines, and Stamford. This Championship entitled N.F.C.V.I. to play for the Central Ontario Secondary School Athletic title of their sport. In November of that year, they went to the University of Toronto in search of victory at this level. Despite cold weather and playing on a frozen field, the Niagara Falls boys played an outstanding game, and were victorious against a tough, determined team from Peterborough, Ontario. Coach Teddy Morris of the Toronto Argonauts, from the Canadian Professional Football League, attended the Championship game. Teddy was so impressed with the ability of the Niagara Falls place kicker, that he extended him an offer to try out with the Argonauts. The N.F.C.V.I. team won the C.O.S.S.A. Championship trophy, and were proud to bring it back to their school.
