In March 1975, the Stamford Collegiate Hornets Senior Boys Basketball Team, coached by Bob Coull, captured the All Ontario “AAA” Basketball title by defeating Sault Ste. Marie Bawating High School by a score of 68-64 in front of a sell out crowd at Brock University. The team posted an overall record of 32-5 on the season, including a record of 10 wins and 2 losses during the regular season to capture the overall City title. A loss at the Zone IV final meant that the Hornets had to win a qualifying game against Denis Morris High school, in order to advance to the Provincial Championships. This time, the Hornets would not be denied a trip to the tournament and they defeated St. Catharines Denis Morris High School 93-45. At the O.F.S.A.A. Provincial Championships, the Hornets went undefeated on their way to the Provincial Championship. The team defeated Hamilton Laurier 69-62 and Windsor Lowe 70-69. In the semi-final, the team defeated Toronto Parkdale Panthers 68-64 and gained a berth in the final against Sault Ste. Marie Bawating Collegiate. The Hornets won the title by defeating Bawating 68-64. This victory marked only the second time in Stamford’s 150 year history that the Boys “AAA” Basketball tile had been won. Making the victory special for the team to this day is the fact that this was Coach Bob Coull’s only Provincial Basketball Championship during his long and illustrious coaching career and the fact that thirty two years later, this feat has not been repeated by any other high school basketball team from the City of Niagara Falls.
