Full size image of plaque Michael Pisano, at the age of ten, began his training and development in his sport under the tutelage of Sensei, Harold Howard. Michael became a registered member of the National Black Belt League (NBBL), where he competed in open tournaments throughout North and South America against martial artists of many types and disciplines. In 1990, Michael won the NBBL North American points title and Self Defense championship. That same year, he finished second in points on the North American Sport Karate International Circuit. In 1991, Michael won the North American Championship title in San Jose, California in an invitational tournament for top rated fighters from North and South America and Europe. That same year, he competed in the Sport Karate International open tournament circuit for black belt fighters and placed 1st in total accumulated points and was awarded the (SKI) North American Championship. In 1991, Michael won the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Association Super-Heavyweight title and was selected to the Canadian National Black Belt Team that represented Canada at the 1992 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships hosted by the country of Argentina and sanctioned by the World Council of Jiu-Jitsu Organizations. At these championships, in competition against 20 member countries, Michael received a 1st place medal as a member of the five man Canadian fighting team. In individual competitions, Michael placed 2nd Self-Defense, 2nd Kata, and 4th fighting as a Super-Heavyweight. In 1992, Michael was selected by the Eastern USA Martial Arts Association as the recipient of the “1992 USA Special Recognition Award” presented in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for his achievements in open martial art competitions. In recognition of his success at the 1992 World championship, Mayor Wayne Thomson and members of the Niagara Falls City Council, presented Michael Pisano with an “Award for Outstanding Achievement” at a ceremony held at City Hall. |
