Born in Waterloo, Ontario on November 18, 1917, Clare “Jada” Dahmer spent his youth in Waterloo where he played Junior “A” hockey and baseball. In 1949, Clare began his career managing the Stamford Memorial Arena as it was under construction and he took on the responsibility of managing Jack Bell as well as the Lions Club outdoor skating rink. Throughout his years as Arena Manager, Clare assisted in developing the Stamford Senior “B” and Junior “B” hockey teams, the Stamford Minor Hockey League, the Stamford Figure Skating Club, Legion Hockey and the Old-Timers Hockey League. In 1951, Clare assisted with the formation of the Stamford Summer Skating School, the first hockey school in Southern Ontario. Clare assisted with the formation of the Mitchell-Burkholder Hockey School. He hosted the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks and Niagara Falls Flyers Junior Camps. Clare organized exhibition hockey games which involved the Detroit Redwings, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers. His love for hockey was truly evident through the amount of hard work and effort he put into everything he did.
Clare has been a member of the Ontario Arenas Association Inc. (O.A.A.Inc.), serving as Secretary-Treasurer and Secretary-Manager, since 1955. Clare assisted with the formation of the Niagara Falls Curling Club in 1954, using the Stamford Memorial Arena on Monday nights prior to their current building. In 1956, Clare helped develop the Arena Management course at The University of Western Ontario. The course has since been transferred to the University of Guelph and has had more than 7,000 people enroll in the program.
In 1984, Clare was the first to be granted an Honorary Certificate by the Parks & Recreation Federation of Ontario. In 1986, he assisted with the Niagara Falls Conference of the O.A.A.Inc. and was presented with the Ronald D. Burnside Memorial Award, in honour of his outstanding contributions to the professional development of the O.A.A.Inc. On October 2, 1987, Clare was presented with one of the most prestigious acknowledgments for his work and contribution to the development of recreation. He received the Ontario Corps d’Elite Ontario award by the Minister of Tourism and Recreation.
