In 2003, their very first year of curling together, the team of Gloria Sorley, Jackie Lococo, Lynne Coull and Marg Newton won the Canadian Women’s Master’s Curling Championship. At the Provincial Championship in Ennismore, February 19 to 22, 2003, the rink went 6 - 1 in the round robin, tied with Unionville. That forced a winner-take-all tie breaker which the Falls foursome won 7- 4. Travelling to Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, March 16 to 23, 2003 for the National Championship, the team posted a 5 - 2 record in the round robin to head into the playoffs in second place. After winning their first four games, the team lost a round robin game to Manitoba 5 - 4 in an extra end. They recovered to beat Saskatchewan 8 - 3, then lost their final game to New Brunswick by a 9 - 7 score. Manitoba finished in first place with a 6 - 1 record. The Sorley skipped team beat British Columbia in the semi-final 9 - 5 and Manitoba 8 - 7 in an extra end in the final to win the championship. It was a real team effort, with Gloria and Jackie bringing 12 years experience at the provincial level to the team and Lynne and Marg contributing energy and grit. This true club team from the Niagara Falls Curling Club all share the same philosophy of hard work and fair play. |
