William Gaynon devoted his life to sport and thousands of youngsters in Niagara Falls benefited from his dedication. Bill was sports editor of the Niagara Falls Evening Review from 1931 to 1949 and wrote with authority and passion about amateur and professional athletics in his column "Sports Desk". His large circle of friends in all sports ranks meant that Review readers often had the inside track on sporting news.

Baseball was Bill's first love and he was dubbed Mr. Baseball for his contributions to the local amateur game. He managed Knights of Columbus and Cataract senior teams from 1920 to 1931 and his clubs won eight District championships, contested the provincial semi- finals and on one occasion were provincial finalists. In
1924-25 Bill acted as President of the junior city league, after leading the St. Pats Juniors to the city league title in 1923. He also served for several years as umpire-in-chief of the Niagara District league. Perhaps his most significant achievement was the formation of the Niagara Falls Baseball Association in 1931. Through Bill Gaynon's efforts, the N.F.B.A. became one of the strongest organizations of its kind in Canada and his contacts with sports notables made the annual banquet an international event which attracted professional baseball players and officials as guest speakers. In 1940 Bill was honoured with the first Life Membership awarded by the Association.
