Known as Mr. Sportsman, Dr. Potter's generosity in sponsoring teams in a wide variety of sports and providing the youth of Niagara Falls with the opportunity to participate is well-known and his contributions to sports and recreation in Niagara Falls outstanding. Dr. Potter was truly a friend to all. A star in basketball, track and field and foot ball during his high school days at Stamford Collegiate, Potter was elected to the Niagara Falls Board of Education in the 1930's and took the lead in the development of the physical education program for local high schools. He helped form and support the city's first junior hockey teams in the 1920's, was instrumental in the evolution of the Niagara Falls Badminton and Tennis Club and contributed significantly to the establishment of both city and church basketball leagues in the 1940's. Dr. Potter sponsored hockey and baseball teams, many of which captured local and Provincial honours and in 1946 paid for the lights, wiring and bleachers which were installed at the Bridge Street grounds to allow night softball games. He also played a leading role in the erection of the new gymnasium at N.F.C.V.I. During his term of office as Past President of the Niagara Falls Lions Club, Potter was responsible for the introduction of several important recreation programs including playgrounds and swimming lessons at the Municipal Pool. Dr. Potter served as a director of the Niagara Falls Junior 'A' Flyers and later for the Tier Two Club. He served for two years on Canada's First National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sports. In recognition of his valuable contribution to local sport, Dr. Potter was awarded an Ontario Achievement Award in 1970 and the 1973 National Conference of Canadian Parks and Recreation Award of Merit.
