Wilfred 'Whitey" Whitehead was one of those natural athletes who took to baseball and bowling. In baseball, he was a valuable and versatile player who could play any outfield or infield position with great ease. In five pin bowling, he rose to be one of the top bowlers in Niagara Falls and the Niagara District.
Whitey was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls. When the Niagara Falls Baseball Association first began, minor baseball was only a junior league. Whitey was an outstanding player with St. Pat's juniors and seniors in the 193O's and played in a four-team senior league in Niagara Falls including Cataracts, Robin Hoods and Chippawa.
He later was one of the main cogs in the success of Niagara Falls Brights' senior team which won the Niagara District league in four successive years reaching the Ontario Baseball Associaton (O.B.A.) quarter finals in 1938, semi-finals in 1939 and championships in 1940 and 1941. During all of his playing years, Whitey was a perennial 300 plus hitter with many extra base hits. He also excelled in that most important category of runs batted in.
From the 193O's to the 1950's, Whitey consistently bowled averages in the 230's and 24O's playing in the strong city league at Bova's Alleys, and later in the district league when Niagara Falls competed against St. Catharines and Welland teams. In December 1938, he registered a triple game score of 964 with individual games of 371, 320, and 273.
