Sam Long is recognized as one of minor hockey's greatest volunteers. His many years of service began with the Catholic Youth Organization. Even though there was no arena available, he formed a juvenile team playing in Welland, Thorold and St. Catharines. This was a forerunner of minor hockey.
In 1969-1970, when the Niagara Falls and Stamford Hockey Associations amalgamated, Sam was elected President. He served as President and Vice-President for 13 years.
He also served as the local association's contact with the Ontario Minor Hockey Association for ten years, looking after scheduling playoffs and referees. This takes great diplomacy, and Sam is well respected in other communities. Later, Sam became the Niagara Falls Minor Hockey Convenor.
Minor Hockey presents a special award called the Dewey Faravante Award. It is to recognize members who have contributed above and beyond the call of duty. Sam has been honoured with this award twice.
In 1983, Sam was presented with Doug Austin Award as Sportsman of the Year in Niagara falls.
Sam Long has displayed outstanding dedication to a sport he loves, and has been a great ambassador for the City of Niagara Falls.
