In 1972, 1974 and 1976, Rod captured the Men's Championship at Willo-Dell Golf Club here in the Falls. In 1978 at the age of 18, Rod placed 2nd in the Canadian junior Championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In 1974 and 1975, Rod teamed up with his father to win the Ontario Father and Son championship. In 1975 Rod placed 3rd at the Ontario Championship. Rod returned to the Ontario Championship in 1977 and captured second place and was on the London Hunt and Members Ontario Willingdon Cup winning team. The year 1977 turned out extremely well for Rod as he captured the Canadian Amateur Championship in Hamilton and was ranked the #1 amateur by the Ontario Golf Association. The following year turned out just as exciting as Rod successfully defended his Canadian Amateur Championship in Laval Sur Le Lac, Montreal and held the #1 position in Ontario's winning Willingdon Cup Team. Rod was again ranked the #1 amateur by the Ontario Golf Association. Rod represented Canada the same year in Bogota, Colombia, South America in the World Amateur Team Championships and placed 3rd. Rod accepted a scholarship to Ohio State University and was Co-Captain for the Varsity Golf Team.
