Michael Barto, the grand old veteran of baseball in Niagara Falls, was known as "Mr. Baseball".
Michael began his long association with the sport in 1931 when he organized the St. Ann's Baseball Teams. He later joined the executive of the Niagara Falls Baseball Association which was to become the Greater Niagara Baseball Association (G.N.B.A.). In 1936, Michael became President of the Association. For many years Michael was Umpire-in-Chief. The "Mike Barto" Squirt League was named in his honour.
Michael Barto ended his active participation in baseball in 1956. He continued to remain a member of the association, and became a life member of the Greater Niagara Baseball Association.
Michael was honoured by the Greater Niagara Baseball Association in 1972, and by the Centurion Club in 1973, to commemorate his lifelong dedicated service to the boys of Niagara Falls and in appreciation for his contribution to baseball in our community.
In recognition of Mr. Barto's 40 year involvement in local baseball, the City of Niagara Falls named a street in his honour, which became known as "Barto Crescent".
