Mark began playing badminton at the age of 15 when, (in the Ontario Badminton Association), he joined up with his doubles partner Tom Peat. As under 19 players, Mark and Tom were nationally ranked sixth. The pair went on to win the Canadian Championship in British Columbia in 1986 and repeated as champions the following year in Edmonton, Alberta. While holding the Canadian College title for three years, they lost only one match during that time. No athlete at Niagara College had ever won a Canadian College title until Mark and Tom came along.

Mark’s success on the court was transferred to coaching and he has coached one of his players to the Provincial Championship. Mark was sent to China by the Ontario government on a playing/coaching capacity. Upon graduating from Niagara College, Mark was honoured with a special athletic award named after him.
