Gerald "Jerry" Shannon, the stick-handling wizard of the Niagara Falls Cataracts, had an exciting hockey career that all began in Niagara Falls.

Born in Campbellford, Ontario in 1910, "Jerry" moved to Niagara Falls with his family at the age of eight.

Jerry began playing Junior Hockey for the Niagara Falls Cataracts from 1926 to 1928. Following this, he played Junior Hockey for the Oakville Lions from 1928-1929. Jerry returned to Niagara Falls to play Senior Hockey for the Niagara Falls Cataracts from 1929 to 1930. The next two seasons, he played for the Port Colborne Sailors until 1932. Again, he returned to play Senior Hockey for the Niagara Falls Cataracts from 1932 to 1933.

In 1933, Jerry signed as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators and turned professional along with three other teammates on the Niagara Falls Cataracts - Ralph "Scotty" Bowman, Max Kaminsky and Walter "Jeff" Kalbfleisch. Jerry was transferred to the St. Louis Eagles after the Ottawa franchise was relocated in 1934. In 1935 he was traded to the Boston Bruins and then traded to the Montreal Maroons in 1936. In 1938, the Maroons traded Jerry to Cleveland for cash and then he was traded again to Hershey.

Throughout his career, Jerry established a wonderful rapport with players, fans and media alike. According to Maroon Manager, Tommy Gorman, Jerry never stopped trying no matter what the score. His attitude became contagious throughout the team, encouraging and motivating players.

Jerry retired from hockey and stayed in Ottawa, where he was responsible for starting a house league for kids. A newspaper article saluted Jerry Shannon, noting that 60 young players had turned out for the tryouts and Jerry did not have the heart to turn these kids away. So, he went back to the arena and arranged for the ice time to begin the house league. He donated much of his time to these youngsters over the next several years. Just another example of Jerry's big heart and caring attitude.
