As a boy Fred Plato learned to love sports as an all-star baseball and basketball player. As an adult, he wanted to give others the opportunity to enjoy sports as much as he did.
Fred became involved in coaching and umpiring baseball in Niagara Falls after moving here in 1955. He was the coach of two All Ontario winning teams: in 1958, with Lorenzo's Juniors; and, in 1962 with the Weightman's Juniors. During this time, Fred continued to umpire in the local leagues.
In 1965, Fred became president of the Greater Niagara Baseball Association (G.N.B.A.). It was in this position that he did the most for the local baseball scene. Fred and his executive
began zoning players for teams. Doug Austin, Niagara Falls Review Sports Editor at the time stated 'A11 players will register with the G.N.B.A. this year and be allotted to teams according to where each player lives. This should eliminate boys travelling from one end of the city to the other and, also eliminate the competition for gathering the better players on one club': Fred was a life member of the G.N.B.A,
Fred put on his manager's cap when asked to manage the Caverly Metros senior baseball team in 1970.
Fred began his involvement in curling in 1967. He became involved with the executive of the Niagara Falls Curling Club and in 1981 was voted president, where he again showed his organizational skills. He was responsible for setting up new accounting and bookkeeping systems. Fred was the Games Captain for 2 years and organized the scoring sheets and points system still in use today.
In his retirement, Fred remained active in sports, enjoying golf and lawn bowling.
