In the early 1930's, Niagara Falls was in the grip of the great depression. It was a time when healthy recreation activities for the youth of the City were sorely needed. Community minded citizens came to the fore. In the field of boys amateur baseball, Mr. Ernest Buckley was one of the leaders. Working within the Greater Niagara Baseball Association, the proprietor of Buckley's Furniture Store was one of the main sponsors of age-limit teams. During 1933 to 1938, Ernest sponsored at least one and often two or three teams in the Midget, Bantam, juvenile, and junior divisions. In all of these endeavours, he was strongly supported and actively assisted by his charming wife, Emma.
Mr. Buckley's financial assistance and hands-on participation not only helped in developing good citizens but was crucial to the success of many of his teams. In 1936, both his West End Bantams and his West End juveniles won provincial titles. That same season, his Midget team won the City championship and his junior team took consolation honours. In other years, his teams were always strong contenders.
Mr. Buckley is honoured as one of the prime builders of amateur baseball in Niagara
Falls.
