Doug is a product of the Niagara Falls Collegiate basketball program. He went on to McMaster University where he set several records with the Marauder basketball team. In 1957, he set a McMaster freshman scoring record of 332 points, with 102 free throws. In 1958 & 1959, he was second in Intercollegiate scoring and in 1960, he was Senior Intercollegiate scoring champion and held several individual records. Among these were 1532 career points, with a season high of 449 points, and a game high of 37 points.
In 1961 -62 he played with the Tillsonburg Livingstones and helped take them to an Ontario and Eastern Canada Championships. From 1963 -68, he played with Sarnia Drawbridge Inn team that won three Ontario Championships, and a Canada Games gold medal in 1967.
In 1972 -73, he coached the London Celtics, winning the O.B.A. championships both years. In 1975 -76, he coached the London Ted Dilts Senior B team to an Ontario Senior "B" title.
From 1962 -93, Doug was a high school coach at three London schools winning two W.O.S.S.A. and five conference championships.
In 1987, he was elected to the McMaster Sports Hall of Fame and in 1988, was selected as a member of the Drawbridge Inn team to the Sarnia Hall of Fame.
