Full size image of plaque Bill Whittet arrived in Niagara Falls at an early age and proceeded to enjoy an outstanding sports career in baseball and hockey. The first year the local Niagara Falls Baseball Association was formed, Bill played for the St. Stephens Midget Champs and progressed through minor baseball to the Senior Furnishers Team of 1941, 1942 and 1943. After serving in the United States Army, Bill returned to the 1946 Senior Houck Team, leading them to the Ontario Championship with a banner performance, winning the Niagara District Batting Title, with a 409 average, leading in hits (47), runs (34), RBI's (29) and stolen bases (16). Bill went on to play for the 1949 fords, Niagara District Senior League Champs and the 1950 Fords Ontario Baseball Association finalists. In 1952, Bill was coach of the Niagara Falls Kerrios and played for Chippawa Kerrios in 1953, winning the Niagara District Senior League Championship. Bill's hockey career began with the Niagara Falls Jr. B Goodcheers Championship team of 1939, which was coached by George Massecar. He later played for the Wire Weaving City Industrial Champs, who went on to the Ontario Intermediate finals. In 1941, Bill joined Philadelphia's team in the United States Amateur Hockey League and then played for Providence, Rhode Island. After the War, Bill returned to play professional hockey with Providence of the American Hockey League, Fresno of the Pacific Coast Hockey League and Houston of the Central Hockey League. He returned to end his hockey career with the Niagara Falls Seniors as playing coach of the Motorville team. After many years of success in hockey and baseball. Bill turned to golf, winning many Houck Golf Tournaments. |
