Moose Lodge Junior Baseball Team 1938

Coached by “Zeke" Garrett the most successful minor pilot in local history, the Niagara Falls Moose Lodge Juniors distinguished themselves repeatedly in 1938, garnering local and provincial amateur baseball titles. The Moose squad topped the Niagara Falls Amateur Baseball Association interlocking junior-juvenile league, eventually taking the playoff title and the Taylor and Bate Trophy by defeating the Burroughs Juniors. This hard fighting scrappy band of ball players then defeated the Niagara District League champion Welland Sun Rays and went on to play the Galt Terrier Pups who surrendered two straight games, scoring only one run against the stingy Moose pitchers. Central Ontario representative Oshawa fell next to the well- balanced Moose aggregation extending the play-down series to the limit before losing the third game by one run. The Galt series featured an innovation for Niagara Falls sports fans with the second game being announced over a public address system at Oakes Stadium by Bill Sootheran. The Moose Juniors were crowned Ontario Baseball Association Junior Champions after beating the Copper Cliff Miners 4 -2 in a one game sudden -death final at Oakes Stadium on October 8, 1938. The championship game was a pitchers' battle with the Copper Cliff pitcher recording 14 strike outs, one less than star Moose hurler Catherwood who also led the hitters.
