Houcks Senior Baseball Team 1946 Houcks pitched and fielded sensationally, hit when needed and ran the bases like deer to claim the 1945 Ontario Baseball Association senior 'N crown and return senior honours to Niagara Falls after a five year absence. Home games in the 53 date schedule were played at Oakes Stadium and were very popular with the fans. Led by the stellar pitching of John Worrall and Tony Rufrano and the M.V.P. performance of third baseman Bill Whittet, Houcks beat Wolkes and Kimberly Clarks to win the first Niagara District championship for Niagara Falls since 1941. The club then engineered a great comeback, holding Welland scoreless in the final three contests, to win a seven game series and earn the right to enter the O.B.A. playoffs. After eliminating Toronto in three straight games in the semi- finals, Houcks advanced to the final round where they captured the series and the Ontario title in convincing fashion, limiting Stratford to three hits and no runs in the final contest. |
