Hamcos Basketball Club 1940 Hamcos captured the 1940 Dominion intermediate basketball title, providing coach C.H. Vandersluys, who piloted local hoop teams for over twenty-five years, with his first national honours. The brilliant team effort was spearheaded by star centre Leo McKenzie who led the Niagara District League in scoring and tallied key baskets in several playoff games. Hamcos rallied in overtime to defeat St. Catharines, winning the Niagara District championship and qualifying for provincial playoff action. They easily disposed of Kitchener in the first round, prevailing in a hotly contested semi -final against Toronto and then bested Windsor to earn provincial "A" honours. The national final was staged at the Niagara Falls Arena and in a hectic finish before a roaring crowd of 1400, Hamcos clinched the Canadian intermediate "A" championship, edging out defending champion Ottawa University by a one point margin on the two game round as they dropped the second contest 46-42 after gaining a five point victory in the opener. |
