Finbow's Juvenile Baseball Team 1966

The Finbow's 1966 Juvenile Baseball Team competed in the Niagara District League with opponents from Dunnville, Fort Erie, Thorold and St. Catharines. At seasons end, their record was 13 wins and three losses, a record good enough to win the League title.
Playoffs began against the St. Catharines team and in the first game in St. Catharines, they came home with a 7 -1 victory. The second game was played the next night at Oakes Park and again they were winners by a score of 9 -2, thereby winning the League Championship in two straight games.
The Ontario Baseball Association set up an All-Ontario Tournament at Oakes Park on September 10th and 11th, 1966. On the Saturday morning they faced a tough team from Hamilton and won in extra innings by a 5 -4 score. Their semi-final game was on Saturday afternoon against a team from Peter- borough and once again they were winners by a score of 4 -1. On Sunday afternoon, the final game was against a powerful team from Guelph and the Finbow squad pitched and batted their way to a 10-0 shutout winning the Provincial Championship.
Steve Newman did a tremendous job as team manager and coach Bev Thompson did everything that you would expect from a first-class coach. This team attracted a lot of major league attention and George McQuinn, an ex-Yankee player, scouted two of the players on the team.
A home and home series was arranged with the Moose Lodge Junior team from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where the first two games were played at Oakes Park in July. In August they played a weekend doubleheader in Johnstown. With a spirit of international goodwill, each team was the winner in two games and every member of the team proved to be a wonderful ambassador for the City of Niagara Falls, Canada.
This talented group of young men naturally followed their success in the sporting world, with each of them being very successful in the following years in their chosen fields of employment.
