Dino's AV Bantam Girls Soccer Team 1983 1983 was only the second competitive season for the Niagara Falls Girls Soccer Club since affiliating with the Ontario Soccer Association in 1981. There were few expectations for Dino's Audio Video Bantam Soccer Team of 1983. They were intended to spend the year building for the future, but from the season's kick-off, it was obvious that no one had told the players or coaches about these plans. The team fought for every victory as though it were their last game. They routinely came back from trailing in the first half to defeat their opponents and were consequently referred to as the "Comeback Kids". St. Catharines, Welland, Grimsby and Fort Erie all found Dino's unstoppable. Success in their league play took the team to the Ontario Cup, where they defeated Oakville 1-0 in the final. The Ontario Cup win earned the team a spot in the Eastern Canadian finals in Montreal. Once at the finals, and despite exhaustion from the eight-hour bus ride, the team defeated New Brunswick 6-1 and upset an undefeated team from Quebec 3-1 to capture the Eastern Canadian Championships. That set the stage for the Canadian Soccer Championship final on October 23, 1983. It was estimated that as many as 1500 people were on hand in the pouring rain to cheer on the little team with the big heart. Once again down 2-0 but never out, the team fought back to a tied game and after two long overtime periods, the game was lost on a penalty shootout. Dino's Audio Video Bantam Girls Soccer Team believed that teamwork makes anything possible and it did. Even today the teams's achievement and spirit still inspires the Niagara Falls Girls Soccer Club when victory seems impossible. |
