Buckley's West Ends Bantam Baseball Team 1936 West Ends captured the 1936 Ontario Baseball Amateur Association bantam championship, the first title in this category for the Niagara peninsula since the formation of the O.B.A.A. in 1918. Under the direction of Zeke Garrett and Earnest Buckley, the inexperienced 16 years and under squad became one of three West Ends teams to earn city honours in 1936 and developed into an offensive and defensive power during the playoffs. Undefeated in league play, West Ends easily beat Centrals in two straight games to take the playoff title and the Troup Trophy and advance to the O.B.A.A. playdowns. Many on the team played their first away games when West Ends eliminated Thorold and then thoroughly dominated Hamilton to become the first Niagara Falls team to qualify for the finals since 1933. After sustaining their only loss of the season in the first game against Toronto Columbus, West Ends, led by the impressive pitching of Cliff Bullock and Bill Harper, came back to win two in impressive fashion and claim the bantam title. |
